Spirit Writing Culture Originating in Yilan
In the late Qing Dynasty, Phoenix halls in Yilan served as gathering places for scholars. Led by imperial degree holders Yang Shih-fang and Lee Wang-yang, the movement received a positive response from the local gentry in Yilan County and quickly spread throughout Yilan. In the early years of the Japanese Occupation, phoenix halls further expanded across Taiwan. This cultural movement with its origins in Yilan went to influence Taiwan as whole.
Phoenix halls, by nurturing talent, fighting opium, promoting poetry societies, and conducting social philanthropic activities, made significant positive contributions to Taiwanese society.
