The Spread of Phoenix Halls
Spirit writing in Yilan in the late Qing Dynasty was moving
towards becoming religious, organized, and normalized. In the
1910s, guild merchant Lu Ting-han and cloth merchant Chen
Zhi-de joined the Huanxing Hall in Toucheng. With the open
character and extreme vitality of businessmen, and the added
convenience of the shipping routes, they utilized guild merchants'
trade networks to transport books and items on sailboats and
helped to spread Phoenix Halls across Taiwan。 |
